The Strong Force
By Thomas Lee Abshier, ND
The Standard Model explains the neutron-proton attraction that allows the congealing of multiple nucleons (i.e. neutrons and protons) to form a multi-proton nucleus by hypothesizing a “Strong Force”. The Strong Force is mediated by the gluon, a particle which is exchanged by quarks. This exchange creates the force between quarks in juxtaposed nucleons, thus creating the attraction between proton and neutron, and thus the ability for multiple protons to exist in the nucleus.
In summary: When the proton and neutron are within sufficient proximity, the gluons can interact between nucleons as well as within the nucleon. The proton and neutron can therefore bind together due to the force created by the shared gluons. Thus the gluons, which were originally formed to hold the nucleon together, serve to bond nucleons when within nuclear-dimension proximities (10-15m).
