The Tunneling Effect is a phenomenon whereby a particle may manifest itself in a position outside of its current energy barriers with a certain probability.  By applying a voltage to a charged particle trapped behind an energy barrier, the charged particle can escape the barrier and conduct, even though the energy barrier for conduction past that point was too high.  This is the phenomenon used in semiconductors such as the Tunnel Diode, and the effect utilized in instruments such as the STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope).

Tunneling is likewise the phenomenon governing the rate of particle decay.  The energy barrier trapping the constituent particles inside a particular particle or isotope is too high for the particle to escape, thus the particle has a definite lifetime of existence as an organized and identifiable particle.  But, the random relocation of a sub-particle, due to the Uncertainty factors associated with the relocation of the Central DP, cause the sub-particles constituting it to occasionally coalesce as a distinct entity in a volume outside of the bonding forces of its parent particle.  The result is the repulsion of the two particles, instead of the bonding attraction that had kept the particle intact, resulting in particle decay.
